Madame Butterfly

Madame Butterfly is ranked number 1 on Opera America’s list of the top 20 most-performed works in North America. Some scholars suggest its tragic tale reflects actual events that occurred in Nagasaki, Japan during the early 1890s. Madame Butterfly passionately explores the consequences of obsessive devotion.

Pinkerton, a U.S. Navy officer in Japan, contracts what he considers a temporary marriage to Cio-Cio-San, called Butterfly, who renounces religion and family in her adoration for him. When Pinkerton leaves for America, he promises to return “when the robins nest again.” Butterfly blissfully ignores warnings of his unfaithfulness and adamantly insists that her husband would never forget his son, “Trouble.” Pinkerton does come back, but Butterfly’s devotion and heart are shattered when she realizes he has not returned for her.

Don Giovanni - Utah Opera

~ Saturday night we went out for a yummy dinner at Bambara and headed over to the Utah Opera’s performance of Don Giovanni. Dinner was delicious, as always – we love that restaurant! And the opera was excellent. Don Giovanni was the first opera that Troy ever saw, and he saw it at the very young age of 8. He loved it, and has been hooked on opera ever since. This was my first time seeing Don Giovanni, and I really enjoyed it! For those that don’t know, it’s basically the story of Don Juan the womanizer who gets sent to hell in the end by the ghost of a man that he had killed when the man was trying to protect the honor of his daughter. The music is beautiful and the production was excellent. The opera was sung in Italian (with English super-titles on a screen above the stage).

Vivace is a funkified bunch of 20, 30, 40 somethings -- single/partnered/married -- who just happen to get their groove on at Utah Symphony | Utah Opera performances.

Rossini's Cinderella

Last night was Utah Opera’s performance of Rossini’s Cinderella – a slightly different version of the classic fairytale. Apparently, “Cinderella” means “goodness triumphant” so with this slightly modified version of the story, the lead is actually “Angelina” (although they still refer to her as Cinderella in the Opera) and she wins the prince’s love because of her kind heart and giving nature.

The story is set in approximately the 1920’s with a selfish, mean and yet somewhat comedic step-father and 2 self-centered mean half-sisters. Instead of a coach and horses taking her to the ball, Cinderella arrives in a vintage car (it looked somewhat like a Duesenberg). And instead of a fairy godmother, she has a guardian angel, if you will (found in the prince’s tutor). All that, mixed in with the prince and his valet switching places for the evening of the ball, and it makes for a very intriguing and entertaining spin-off of the classic storyline.

The sets, costumes and story were all phenomenal and the whole experience was very entertaining! One challenge they faced was the volume of the singers, as it was very hard to hear them at times (Cinderella especially), however, the performance is still very worth seeing!

Even if you aren't normally an Opera fan, I think you will enjoy this one. There were several opera novices sitting near me and they all seemed to very much enjoy the show. The storyline was familiar enough for them to easily follow just by watching, but the the addition of the "supertitles" its very simple to follow the dialogue. If you've been wanting to try an Opera, this is a good one to start with!
