Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto

I don't care whether you like Tchaikovsky and Brahms, or not, but they sure do bring in the crowds! We went to the Symphony last night and it was more full than we had seen it in weeks and we were thrilled!!

I personally loved both of the pieces performed... such beautiful music! The piano soloist (Alexander Paley) did an amazing job!! And I thought the conductor (Jean-Claude Casadesus) was wonderful as well!

Madame Butterfly

We had the privilege of seeing Ballet West's Madame Butterfly on Friday night. It was a wonderful performance!! Victoria Lock, one of the Demi-Soloists, performed the role of Cio-Cio San and she did an AMAZING job!! I believe Pinkerton was performed by Christopher Anderson and he did an excellent job as well!

I could have done completely without the whole "Gong" piece... but I loved Madame Butterfly!

Ballet West's next show is the Treasures of the Ballet Russes, and there is a whole festival (March 4th to April 8th) the month of the show... be sure to check it out!

Been a bit of a slacker... sorry!

INTERIORS celebrates the work of Artistic Director Charlotte Boye-Christensen with a full evening of her choreography, featuring a new collaboration with a local graffiti writer.

Arguably, graffiti is as socially and culturally relevant today as the native petroglyphs of the Southwest were in the past. This impulse we as humans have to add our mark, our understanding, indeed our own art to the natural world, is the point of departure from which this collaboration between graffiti writer Trent Call and Boye-Christensen will develop and unfold.

Also restaged will be her multi-media work "Lost" inspired by the artwork of four Mexican artists struggling to find their own identity through artistic expression. Kathy Adams of The Salt Lake Tribune described it as "gritty and raw, with the humanity and appeal of Boye-Christensen's earlier work" and named it the Best Premiere of 2007.

Madame Butterfly

Madame Butterfly is ranked number 1 on Opera America’s list of the top 20 most-performed works in North America. Some scholars suggest its tragic tale reflects actual events that occurred in Nagasaki, Japan during the early 1890s. Madame Butterfly passionately explores the consequences of obsessive devotion.

Pinkerton, a U.S. Navy officer in Japan, contracts what he considers a temporary marriage to Cio-Cio-San, called Butterfly, who renounces religion and family in her adoration for him. When Pinkerton leaves for America, he promises to return “when the robins nest again.” Butterfly blissfully ignores warnings of his unfaithfulness and adamantly insists that her husband would never forget his son, “Trouble.” Pinkerton does come back, but Butterfly’s devotion and heart are shattered when she realizes he has not returned for her.

Whenever Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company presents dance-theater icon Alwin Nikolais' work, it scores a hit. Whether with European audiences in Paris, or Orange County, Calif., the enthusiasm is palpable. But never more so than when the dancers are back home in Salt Lake City.
Maybe it's the theatricality that gives this body of work such universal appeal, and these dances remain among the company's most popular. For good reason: Alwin Nikolais (1910-1993), with a career spanning 50 years, is the father of multimedia performance art, known for his affected perceptions of lighting, music, costuming and even the definition of abstraction.
"Crucible," the first piece in R-W's "Tower," offers a textbook example of Nikolais' choreographic style. Arms first appear on stage, brightly lit and moving in organic yet unnatural ways, seemingly disconnected from bodies. Nikolais wanted to take the focus off the dancers as individuals and place them in an environment that would create impressions and images.
Later in the dance, when full bodies are revealed, they function as screens for the spectacular lighting effects, and the dancers remain unidentifiable figures. Still, "Crucible" is hypnotic. It demonstrates Nikolais' love for the body in motion and gives audiences new perspectives on time and space.
"Tensile Involvement" redefines the space with huge elastic bands strung from the ceiling and across the stage. In this piece, the dancers are clearly visible in brightly colored unitards, exploring the effects of weight and energy on the elastic cords. Dancer Caine Keenan performed a solo, not as an abstract element but as a fully fleshed-out dancer. Keenan is a dancer who could be considered - to use a sports term - "coachable." Based on this performance, he probably cleans out his kitchen sink with gusto.
Although Nikolais broke from the Martha Graham-era tradition of storytelling through myths or history, his choreography always revolves around a central idea. "Liturgies" contains characters with specific parts and movement themes that convey a formalized structure. Dancer Jo Blake portrays a menacing Sorcerer who uncovers the frailties of humankind, while Erin Lehua Brown moves economically, giving clarity to the quickest of movements.
"Tower," a newly reconstructed piece, is more overtly theatrical in a wacky, wild, anything-goes mid-'60s kind of way. It's endearingly reminiscent of that optimistic time before the self-important postmodernists seized control of nonclassical dance. It's a work that causes the audience to laugh out loud during "Tower," as the dancers reveal their true personalities through onstage conversations and comments. This is the controlled energy of good entertainment.

Ririe-Woodbury commemorates its 45th Anniversary with TOWER, a newly reconstructed work by theatre wizard Alwin Nikolais which was recently recognized as an "American Masterpiece" by the National Endowment for the Arts.

This brilliant multi-media work, created in 1965, uses architectural elements to form a microcosm of society and is notable for the incessant, often hilarious verbal commentary by the dancers.

Said to be an "indictment of the American babble," Tower is "fast, funny and evocative." At the end of this fast-talking piece, humankind comes off as "both the victor and the victim of his environment [Time Magazine]" as this Tower of Babble comes crashing down. The evening includes other Nikolais favorites Tensile Involvement, Crucible, and the regional premiere of Liturgies.

wonderfully!

They started the concert with the National Anthem, which was especially moving considering the close proximity to Sept 11th.

Salt Lake City tap artist Deborah Robertson will join him for some of the dances.

OK – can I just tell you how very cool this site is - http://www.nowplayingutah.com/. It seriously rocks! It’s such an awesome tool for finding out what’s going on….. use it!

Last night we attended Ballet West’s Innovations – what a phenomenal show! http://www.balletwest.org/

Three of the pieces were choreographed by dancers from Ballet West, and these numbers were all spectacular. It also seemed that the dancers really enjoyed performing the numbers, which made it that much more moving for the audience. It was a spectacular show and if you don’t have tickets yet…. Hurry and get some! Only 2 more shows!

I sincerely hope that Ballet West will either bring some of these same pieces to Studio D’s Out of the Box show next season, or have the dancers create some new ones… it would be a great addition to the show with the companies from RDT and RWDC.

Don Giovanni - Utah Opera

~ Saturday night we went out for a yummy dinner at Bambara and headed over to the Utah Opera’s performance of Don Giovanni. Dinner was delicious, as always – we love that restaurant! And the opera was excellent. Don Giovanni was the first opera that Troy ever saw, and he saw it at the very young age of 8. He loved it, and has been hooked on opera ever since. This was my first time seeing Don Giovanni, and I really enjoyed it! For those that don’t know, it’s basically the story of Don Juan the womanizer who gets sent to hell in the end by the ghost of a man that he had killed when the man was trying to protect the honor of his daughter. The music is beautiful and the production was excellent. The opera was sung in Italian (with English super-titles on a screen above the stage).

Rossini's Cinderella

Last night was Utah Opera’s performance of Rossini’s Cinderella – a slightly different version of the classic fairytale. Apparently, “Cinderella” means “goodness triumphant” so with this slightly modified version of the story, the lead is actually “Angelina” (although they still refer to her as Cinderella in the Opera) and she wins the prince’s love because of her kind heart and giving nature.

The story is set in approximately the 1920’s with a selfish, mean and yet somewhat comedic step-father and 2 self-centered mean half-sisters. Instead of a coach and horses taking her to the ball, Cinderella arrives in a vintage car (it looked somewhat like a Duesenberg). And instead of a fairy godmother, she has a guardian angel, if you will (found in the prince’s tutor). All that, mixed in with the prince and his valet switching places for the evening of the ball, and it makes for a very intriguing and entertaining spin-off of the classic storyline.

The sets, costumes and story were all phenomenal and the whole experience was very entertaining! One challenge they faced was the volume of the singers, as it was very hard to hear them at times (Cinderella especially), however, the performance is still very worth seeing!

Even if you aren't normally an Opera fan, I think you will enjoy this one. There were several opera novices sitting near me and they all seemed to very much enjoy the show. The storyline was familiar enough for them to easily follow just by watching, but the the addition of the "supertitles" its very simple to follow the dialogue. If you've been wanting to try an Opera, this is a good one to start with!

Bravo Broadway, Out of the Box were last week, now on to Cinderella and Charette

Utah Symphony was excellent, as always! It was the “Bravo Broadway” concert last weekend – It was a collection of songs from Broadway Musicals, with the Symphony playing and 3 different people singing. There were songs from shows such as, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Evita, Mama Mia, and many others! It was such a fun evening!

On Saturday night we had our first annual “Out of the Box” event for Studio D. Studio D is a group that is working to increase the younger audience for 3 of the dance companies in Utah – Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Repertory Dance Theater and Ballet West. “Out of the Box” was a first of a kind production where all three dance companies performed together in one show. It was wonderful to see them all working together and it was such a fun night! The show sold out which was great! The food and desserts were yummy! Several restaurants donated food for our party so a special thank you to Market Street Broiler, PF Changs, Tin Angel, Acme Burger and Flemings!! And we had lots of fun chatting with everybody and watching the shows. The evening was a great success and we can’t wait to do it again next year!

Next week is the opening of the Utah Opera's production of Cinderella - a few changes to the story and the setting have been made and it is sure to be unforgettable! Don't miss it!

This past weekend I attended both Beethoven's Seventh and The Crystal & The Sphere — both amazing shows!

Utah Symphony performed Beethoven's Seventh and the crowd absolutely loved it! There was also a gust artist - Robert McDuffie, a violin soloist. He was very entertaining to watch, and a privilege to listen to!

Ririe-Woodbury's performance of Alwin Nikolais' The Crystal and The Sphere was also an excellent show! The show was entertaining, fun and even humorous at times. It was a show that all ages could enjoy!

We are so lucky, here in Salt Lake, to have so many great performing arts groups and companies. And they are all very affordable and easily accessible. So please be sure that you get out and support the arts!

RDT Steps Out of the Box with Ririe-Woodbury and Ballet West

You might remember that last year, RDT partnered with Ballet West & Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company to form Studio D. Studio D invites 20-, 30-, and 40-somethings (single, partnered, or married) to four or five dance performances each season, and to fabulous after-parties at local restaurants.

On March 1, Studio D is putting together an event like no other. At Out of the Box you'll eat, drink, and be entertained by artists from Ballet West, Repertory Dance Theatre, and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, all in the same show! VIVACE and the Symphony... Saturday, Nov 10th

The performance: Stravinsky's pagan-inspired work, with its new sounds and ferocious rhythms, so shocked the audience at its premiere that they were driven to violent action. What started as catcalls and whistles soon led to shouts and fistfights in the aisles between the haters and Stravinsky's fans. Vivace can't promise anything that riotous, but you never know with a crowd as funkified as ours! Joining Stravinsky's wild work are two pieces by another hot-blooded Russian, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Twenty-something cellist Julie Albers, along with Music Director Keith Lockhart and the Utah Symphony, will wow audiences with Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. Vivace members sit together and get a special version of the program notes.

The after-party: Party all night long with fellow Vivace peeps, Julie Albers, Keith Lockhart, and members of the Utah Symphony while enjoying the extraordinary culinary delights of The New Yorker*.
